Introduction

Today is June 27th, the first day of CCOUN 3601. I have already been at my internship for 2 weeks now. I am interning at LIFT, a non-profit organization that works one-on-one with clients to help them with employment, housing, or public benefits. I am working at the Cambridge location which is in Central Square. I am a rising junior and a Human Services major with a specialization in non-profit management and a Creative Writing minor.

I really like LIFT so far. It serves families and individuals who need a extra helping hand. What I like most about LIFT is that they aren't just trying to hand out benefits, but to really help people improve their lives. LIFT's mission is to combat poverty and expand opportunity. It is a really simple, but powerful mission. I work at lift on wednesdays and thursdays. On wednesdays I am only there from 1 to 5 and I am meeting with clients the entire time. On thursdays I am there from 9 to 5 and in the morning I do admin work. When we meet with the clients we have to assess their situation and determine the best course of action. During admin work I do general work, like calling the clients to remind them of their meetings or take messages. It is not as interesting as client work, but it is still things that need to be done.

When I started I was really nervous about meeting with clients because I was nervous about who I'd meet and if I'd know what to do. I've already become more comfortable meeting with clients because I know that they are all nice people who just want to improve their lives. I also realized that LIFT really has a lot of resources and they are not hard to find. I also know if I have trouble with a client I can always ask my supervisor. Both of my site supervisors are really nice, knowledgeable relaxed. The LIFT office is very small, but I really like all of my co-workers. Next time I go into work I will discuss goals with my supervisor.
